Gianni Versace was one of the Great Ones! His use of colors; his knowledge of the human body form and the ability to accentuate it with the finest silks and satins, bla, bla, bla…..

An African woman traveling on a plane was asked by another passenger, why Africans wear such bright colored clothing. She politely responded that her clothing reflects what she sees from her window when she wakes up in the morning.
In my opinion, this „inspired by my surroundings“ concept is what made Gianni Versace so unique. He burst onto the fashion scene in 1978 with his first collection. It was as though someone opened a brand new box of Crayons!
His use of primary colors (and purple) and his affinity to the „Medussa“ were a welcome ray of sunshine to the otherwise beige, black or brown catwalks.
It was still a time when the fashion world waited on the Fashion Designers to tell them what would be the „Color or Cut of the Season“. Versace Designs instead, reflected his surroundings. Whether it was the strong glaring yellow of the Italian sun, or the party lights of whatever Discotheque somewhere in the world that happened to be „the Spot“, his designs were a reflection of his lifestyle. This is what made Gianni Versace great and relevant and why he continues to have an effect on today’s generation.
